Voting/Elections

No Choice?

I’ll be 77 in a few months. Supported Democratic candidates my entire voting life. Over half a century. An oft repeated phrase now stands out to me as I think about how politics have evolved in America over so many years: “The lesser of two evils.” Since the 1996 presidential election, after Bill Clinton had begun abandoning working Americans in favor of Wall Street during his first term in the White House, I feel have been voting for the lesser of two evils for the Oval Office. It has become painfully clear after almost 30 years of doing so, that voting for ...

It Happened Before and it Can Happen Again

I recently read several books on American history that have a message for what is happening in our country today. Today we face threats to democracy and to a just, civil society. We are seeing a rise of authoritarianism, resurgence of hate, racism, toxic religiosity, and the breakdown of civility in public life. There are threats of violence from far-right domestic terrorists. It has all happened before and can happen again. Rachel Maddow is a television commentator and author. Her latest book is “Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism.” The book tells the ...

Help Reduce to Homelessness in Wausau

Individuals without housing are a part of many communities across the country. Unhoused people face challenges that are varied and not easily addressed. As long as their housing  and other individual needs remain unmet, some collisions with the interests of the broader community are likely. Won’t our city and county benefit most if we don’t simplify this complex issue and instead explore multiple perspectives and approaches? Aren’t we best served by moderating differences to craft reasonable problem-solving plans and implementation measures? Compromise, as ...
