Hundreds of people came for a fun day oF progressive politics and music. Bobfest is named after Robert M. “Fighting Bob” La Follette, who presented many speeches in many parks and fairgrounds throughout Wisconsin 100 years ago. PRESERVE WISCONSIN’S GAB

Voters standing at voting booths
PRESERVE WISCONSIN’S GAB By Rita Pachal As of this writing the governor and legislature are looking to overhaul the GAB or Government Accountability Board. This board governs our elections and the use of money in campaigns. It also investigates violations of the state ethics code. This board consists of six former judges and staff. It was formed in 2007 when both Republicans and Democrats were mired in scandals. The formation of the board was supported by both parties and was passed almost unanimously. The GAB forum held on September 14 at UWMC had panelists ...

ACTIVE CITIZENS MAKE DEMOCRACY WORK

Democracy
Democracy requires citizens to be involved. It isn't a spectator sport. Too often people think electing a new president or a better legislator will solve our problems. Then they are disappointed when they find out he or she is a just another politician. Little or nothing changes. We want a savior when what really works is citizen involvement. None of the progress we now enjoy came about by accident. None of it happened because the political leadership had vision. It all took decades of work by many people. It took citizens demanding change. Abolition of slavery, ...

TELL LAWMAKERS TO KEEP THEIR HANDS OFF GAB.

Election Sign
TELL LAWMAKERS TO KEEP THEIR HANDS OFF GAB. By Joyce Luedke An August 25, 2015, editorial in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel states: “As we suspected, a state audit released last week found no major problems with Wisconsin’s nonpartisan Government Accountability Board, which handles ethics complaints and supervises state elections. Of course, you wouldn’t know that from the rhetoric coming from Republicans in the Legislature, some of whom want to gut this government watchdog.  Citizens of this state need to send them a strong message: NO. When even the MJS ...

WHY UNIONS MATTER – Lest We Forget

Worker sitting on a forklift
WHY UNIONS MATTER Lest We Forget By Kath Michel Labor Day, held on the first Monday of September, was designated, in 1894, as an annual federal holiday to celebrate and show appreciation for the work of labor organizations and for their contribution to the American economy. After one hundred and six years, do we have anything left to celebrate?  The Wisconsin Governor and his ilk have waged an all-out war on unions in Wisconsin. With stout financial support from a boatload of backers including Charles and David Koch, the Bradley Foundation (whose president and CEO, ...

50 YEARS OF THE VRA…VOTING RIGHTS ACTS

"Vote Here" yard sign
50 YEARS OF THE VRA…VOTING RIGHTS ACTS From League of Women Voters August 6 was the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). This landmark civil rights legislation has protected voters from discrimination for nearly half a century. But today, the VRA does not offer the same protections it did in 1965.  The U.S. Supreme Court in 2013 gutted key provisions of the VRA in its Shelby County v. Holder decision. Congress currently has before it various proposals, but there’s been no legislation passed to repair the damage. Meanwhile, new restric...
