WITH GREAT FREEDOM COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY

Progressives in our state are working together, more than ever before. With networking on the social media as well as meeting on the sidewalks and town squares, progressives are on the move.   We are carrying a great tradition of Fighting Bob LaFollette, who took on the Robber Barons, the Lumber Barons, the Railroad Barons one hundred years ago.   Democracy is fragile. The struggle to protect the rights of all living things, including Mother Earth, continues. We fought this battle before. We declared independence from the Commonwealth of Great ...

AN UNAPOLOGETIC CONSERVATIVE

Conservative   con·ser·va·tive   (kən-sûr′və-tĭv)  believing in the value of established and traditional practices in politics and society;  disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change. It is indicative of the extremism sweeping America when, after spending all of my life thinking of myself as a “liberal” or “progressive,” now in my 70’s, I find I must join with other conservatives to fight the radical changes destroying my nation. I must declare I have become an unapologetic ...

CONNECT WISCONSIN WITH BETTER BROADBAND

Governor Tony Evers called a special session to take up agriculture bills, creating the Blue Ribbon Commission on Rural Prosperity and establishing the Office of Rural Prosperity. In western Wisconsin, we have an opportunity to step up and continue leading the way. We should think of rural prosperity as a jigsaw puzzle. Rural prosperity relies on our agricultural industry, job security, entrepreneurial opportunity, tourism, quality schools, community spaces and more. Each individual piece contributing to rural prosperity has a purpose and need. However, these pieces ...

WHY DON’T YOU FEEL AS THOUGH THE 2017 TAX CUTS AND JOBS ACT HELPED YOU?

Why Don't You Feel As Though the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Helped You?   Because unless you have very high income, the federal income tax rate cuts you receive are so tiny they are hardly noticeable. Folks in the top 1 percent income bracket will save $51,000.   Because household tax cuts expire after 2025.   Because you need to own stocks, bonds, real estate investments and corporations to benefit. The biggest winners in the 2017 tax cuts were corporations -- their rate dropped almost 40 percent, from 35% to 21% -- and those getting ...

WHERE IS OUR NATION HEADED?

The current trial of President Trump with the possibility of his removal from office is of major importance for our nation and world. But I think there are a number of reasons besides the evidence of “abuse of power” and “obstruction of Congress” for his impeachment and subsequent removal from office.   They include: President Trump has abandoned the commitment of our nation to the Paris Climate Agreement, thus turning our back on the critical need to immediately convert our nation to a carbon-free energy system. There is no time to lose. &nbsp...

THE BOMBING THAT STAYED A SECRET

We are all familiar with the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This surprise attack killed thousands of soldiers and brought America into World War II.   Have you heard of the bombs that were dropped on the wooded area of Brookings, Oregon in 1942?  Not many people know of this attack because no people were killed. However, the bombs did start fires in the wooded area.   The pilot Nobuo Fujita traveled from Japan to the Oregon coast in a submarine. This was a secret mission. Not even Nobuo’s wife knew of this plan. The crew reassembled ...

BUYING A JUDGE

A good work of fiction can contain a lot of truth. This is the case with a John Grisham novel I recently read. The Appeal tells a fictional, but very believable, story about the buying of a state supreme court justice. In Wisconsin a similar plot occurred in real life. Last year an unqualified, but politically connected conservative Supreme Court justice was purchased.   The gist of the novel is that a chemical company loses a law suit over poisoning a small town's water supply and causing a cancer cluster. The billionaire CEO vows never to pay a dime to the ...
