Individual Liberty and Health Care

Recently I had conversation with a college student on the subject of a national health care program. The student objected to “Obama Care” because it limited his “liberty.” Being required to participate infringed on his freedom to choose not having health insurance. He also objected to paying for other people, especially those who might do unhealthy things. I suggested to him that we are all members of a society. No man, or woman, is an island and no one is free to do, or not do, anything they want. All civilized societies impose necessary restrictions on people. ...

MODERN MONETARY THEORY UNIT III: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SPENDING FUNDS TAXES

Imagine for a moment that this popularly held belief is true – that the US Federal Government has no money of its own and depends on taxes to fund any government spending. Think about this. Ask yourself the obvious question. If the US Federal government has no money of its own and depends on tax dollars for its operation, where did the tax dollars people pay each year come from in the first place? Well, we would all answer, “I work hard for my wages or salary and part of the money I earn is taken away from me to pay my federal and state taxes. That’s where federal ...

MODERN MONETARY THEORY UNIT II: THE MONETARY SYSTEM OF THE UNITED STATES

The US Government cannot run out of money any more than Lambeau Field can run out of points during a Packer game. Quoting former Chairman of the US Federal Reserve Bank (the Fed), Ben Bernanke, during a 2009 interview with Scott Pelley on CBS 60 Minutes: (PELLEY): “Is that tax money the Fed is spending?” (BERNANKE): “It’s not tax money. The banks have accounts with the Fed much the same way that you have an account with a commercial bank. So, to lend to a bank, we simply use the computer to mark up the size of the account that they have with the Fed.” In ...

EARTH DAY SHOULD BE EVERY DAY

It’s been eight years since anyone in our executive branch of government uttered the words “climate change.” Thankfully, Governor Tony Evers brought science, common sense and the term climate change back to Wisconsin. Since the 1970’s, Wisconsin Governors have shaped our nation’s conservation legacy. In my office, over my desk, hangs a poster from Governor Gaylord Nelson’s campaign. The man from Clear Lake was ahead of his time. He did all he could to raise awareness that the earth is worth protecting. We recently celebrated Earth Day. From recycling to ...

A CALL TO ACTION FOR OUR EARTH

I find myself deeply concerned about the planet this year. I have been thinking a lot lately about how distant so-called “civilized” society has become from the natural world around us. We have created a world within a world that is filled with useless plastic objects, traveling machines, endless entertainment, and a never-silent call to consume ever more useless plastic objects. I have often thought, with all the prepared soft food we eat that we will be toothless. In short, we are becoming abstractions to ourselves as though we are simply mobile collections of ...
