The topic of metallic mining has once again surfaced in Wisconsin. Congressman Tom Tiffany (7th congressional district) has been making many stops lately promoting sulfide mines in Wisconsin. Two places that are being considered for exploration are the reef deposit near the Dells of Eau Claire and the Bend deposit in Taylor County. It has become increasing difficult to oppose sulfide mining due to Tom Tiffany’s passage of Act 134 legislation in 2020.

Our speaker, Dave Blouin of Madison is the chair of the Sierra Club’s state mining committee and co-founder of the Mining Impact Coalition of Wisconsin.   Both organizations worked on the Flambeau mine, the Crandon mine proposal, the Gogebic Taconite proposal, state legislation including a proposed ban on cyanide in mining, the Prove It First law and more.  He is a mining industry researcher, analyst, organizer and activist with nearly 30 years’ experience.

We urge you to watch the Marathon County Board agenda as this will be coming up for discussion. Also watch the Taylor County Board agenda. For further information Laura Schulte from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published an excellent piece on mining March 16.
