GET OUT AND VOTE

George Carlin said, "If you don't vote, you lose the right to complain." I don't know if that's true, but I'd rather not find out. I know that voting is the one thing I can do, and as difficult as Wisconsin is trying to make it to vote, the more I'm determined to exercise my one most basic rights.  Make sure you're registered! People with disabilities are protected and can have friends or family members drop off their ballots. I know people who work on elections, they are my friends and neighbors. They work hard to make sure elections are fair and secure. Attacks on them are attacks on my community. What people are saying about fraud only seems ...

Access to Clean Drinking Water Shouldn’t be Controversial

Ensuring access to clean drinking water shouldn’t be a point of contention. Water is essential to life, and there should be bipartisan consensus that we must protect this vital resource. Yet, in the Northwoods, our water and our environment have been repeatedly sabotaged by our representative – first when he was in the State Legislature, and again once he joined Congress. Toxic Tom Tiffany has been a disaster for Wisconsin’s environment for over a decade, siding with mining and chemical companies over the health and well-being of his own district. It’s well-known that sulfide mines pollute. There has never been one that doesn’t. ...

The Coalition to Save the Menominee River

A very big thank you to everyone for all your hard work and participation in the Peshtigo Parade on Saturday, September 24. I won't name anyone for fear of forgetting someone. From the initial idea, to setting it all up, to carrying signs and handing out literature, everyone in the Coalition works so well together to ensure success. The Coalition to Save the Menominee River was highly visible in the parade as we work toward Saving the Menominee River.

Ron Johnson’s Stance on Social Security is Wrong

I worked for 45 years to earn a living for myself and my family. For decades, I paid into Social Security, setting money aside so that when I retired, I could keep a roof over my head and food on the table. Like so many people across our state, I knew that Social Security and Medicare would support me in the next phase of my life. This past weekend marked the 87th anniversary of Social Security. Over the last 87 years, this program and Medicare have become overwhelmingly popular programs that millions of working people rely on. Yet, while this anniversary should have been a celebration of this important program, it was instead a grave ...

Fear Mongering

The Republican Party wants us to fear Mandela Barnes, but what frightens me is the prospect of another 6 years of Ron Johnson in the US Senate. Despite looming global catastrophe, Johnson remains a climate change denier of the first order, calling it “ bullsh*t ,” doubling down on fossil fuel production, confirming judges who gut the EPA’s ability to regulate greenhouse gases, and consistently voting against climate action legislation, most recently the transformational Inflation Reduction Act. In Mandela Barnes, I see a talented leader who, as chairman of the Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change, brokered agreement among farmers, ...

Water Protectors

Water Protectors: The H.E.L.P. Campaign to Save the Penokees You need to read this book. The H.E.L.P. Campaign to save the Penokees is still powerful in showing what grassroots organizing can do and what community activism looks like. Back in 2013 I arrived in Mellen with several others from the Wausau area. We were greeted by none other than the author of this book, Nick Vander Puy. Along with him were Penokee Pete and Paul DeMain, and several others. It was an educational day for me up there, one of many that would follow. That day in Mellen at the Penokee Summit was a day I will never forget. Little did I know then, just how much that ...
