Move To Amend Petition on November 4th Wausau Ballot
Something amazing has been happening in the city of Wausau. For the past two months 55 volunteers have been at your Wednesday night concerts, farmers’ markets and doors getting signatures on a petition. On August 13th the city council voted unanimously to put this petition on the November 4th ballot as a referendum.
The petition reads:
“Shall the City of Wausau adopt the following resolution?
Whereas, the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and related case law allows unlimited political campaign spending to influence local, state, and federal elections;
RESOLVED, the City of Wausau, Wisconsin, calls for reclaiming democracy from the corrupting effects of undue corporate influence by amending the United States Constitution to establish that:
1. Only human beings — not corporations, limited liability companies, unions, nonprofit organizations, or similar associations — are endowed with constitutional rights, and
2. Money is not speech, and therefore regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting political speech.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we hereby instruct our state and federal representatives to enact resolutions and legislation to advance this effort.”
The amazing aspect of this all is that not only the 55 volunteers, but the petition was turned in with over 600 more signatures than was needed and four days earlier than the allotted 60 days. This referendum needs a “YES” vote. We the people of Wausau need our voices heard.
