Will We Survive

Nicholas Kristof is a Conservative columnist for the New York Times.

In his article, “Don’t Let Liberal Purity Elect Trump,” Kristof lists the dangers if Donald Trump is elected.

I will summarize Kristof’s main points.

“So to those so upset about Bidens’ policies in the Middle East that they are thinking about voting for Trump, staying home or voting for a third-party candidate-I understand. But don’t allow this anger to elect Trump, for that would amplify the suffering abroad that rightly upsets you. Refusing to vote may seem like a noble gesture, but it’s a self-marginalization that could mean even more starving people, even more displacement and even death.”

“Even if one somehow believed there wasn’t much difference between Harris and Trump on the Middle East, remember that much more is at stake than that. Trump bungled the beginning of the pandemic, tried to repeal Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) and appointed some of the Supreme Court justices who took away abortion rights. Trump cut taxes for the wealthy, while Biden and Harris reduced child poverty by half—until Republicans blocked an extension of the program and sent child poverty soaring again.”

“Harris doesn’t praise Hitler; she never tried to overthrow an election; she didn’t sexually abuse anyone; and she isn’t a felon.”

“The brazen racism at the Madison Square Garden rally is shocking, even for this campaign,” said Amy Spitalnick, C.E.O of the Jewish Council for Public affairs. “The goal is to desensitize us to this hate.”

Speakers demonized Latinos, Puerto Ricans, religious minorities, union members, veterans, and so many others. Crude, vulgar, and obscene words were directed at V. P. Kamala Harris, Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and others.

Just imagine if these obscene words were directed at your mother, wife, or daughter. These crude words hurt all of us!!

“That rally was a return to the kind of racist, sexist, homophobic rhetoric that is becoming more normalized in American discourse,” said Raul Perez, assistant professor of sociology at the University of La Verne.

As we are seeing, the hate and lies are working. Just look at the faces of the hundreds of people at the rallies.

Hundreds of Republicans are “sounding the alarm” regarding the threat to our form of government should Trump be elected.

If our form of government is destroyed and a fascist, authoritarian form of government takes its place, what will be your response?

Are you okay that hundreds of programs that help millions of people will be changed or dismantled including the Affordable Care Act, the Head Start Program. Department of Education, the Justice Department, the media and the press, and the role of Congress would be diminished. See Project 2025

In less than a week, maybe longer we will see if our form of government and all that it entails will survive.  I continue to pray.
