Scrap the Cap
The Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans is pleased to announce our Save Social Security actions across Wisconsin this summer and fall, following our popular events this spring. Social Security just celebrated its 89th birthday earlier this month!
The WIARA has partnered with the American Federation of Government Employees Council 220 to hold demonstrations across Wisconsin. We will be taking action and demonstrating in front of Wisconsin Social Security field offices demanding that Social Security be protected, modernized and expanded! American Federation of Government Employees President Jessica LaPointe reports the Social Security Agency is severely under-staffed and under-funded, and a 27 year low in staffing has caused out of control workloads.
Currently once you make $168,600.00, you no longer pay into FICA. What we are asking is to have that cap raised to $400,000.00. Have the richest pay their fair share, tax the wealthiest. We have contributed to their success as consumers. Currently what we have is a regressive tax. There is a possibility that by 2035 we could see only 83% of benefits paid out to Social Security and Social Security disability. We should see an increase in benefits now, up to $200.00 more per month for COLA (cost of living adjustment). It is ridiculous to raise the retirement age. This does nothing but lessen the quality of life for our retirees.
At this action, we’ll stand in front of Social Security Field offices, holding signs and hearing from speakers. These events will last approximately one hour.
