WHAT’S A WOMAN WORTH?

Please join us for an afternoon of learning and lively conversation on a topic of concern everywhere in our society: wage (and often power) inequalities that women continue to face in the workplace. Wage disparity not only adversely affects women and their families all their working lives, but in retirement as well. This discussion puts all of these topics on the table. “What’s a Woman Worth?” will be held Thursday, September 14 at WEAC Region 3 Office, 1136 N. Military Road in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The time is 1 to 3:30 p.m. There is no charge. You do not need ...

Ruminations on Foxconn

The giant electronics manufacturer Foxconn has announced it will locate in Wisconsin. It supposedly plans to spend $10 billion to create a “campus” to build LCD panels. The politicians were, of course, tripping over themselves to get in on the photo op. But I wonder if the old adage applies: “If it sounds too good to be true...it probably is.” The announcement was held at the White House. Foxconn CEO Terry Gou, President Trump, Governor Walker, and House Speaker Paul Ryan were in attendance. Trump, with typical arrogance, said it wouldn't have happened if he ...

Cuba: Some Historic Perspective

“Right actions in the future are the best apologies for bad actions in the past.” Tryon Edwards, 19th century American theologian Normalizing relations with Cuba is long overdue. For over 50 years we have tried to change the government and social structure of this small, poor nation. Our animosity toward Cuba has been irrational, unnecessary, and contrary to our founding principles of liberty and democracy. President Obama's move toward normal relations was just the beginning. American involvement in Cuba began long before Castro and the current socialist ...

ARE YOU AN ANIMAL?

Are you an animal? Does your employer or former employer see you as an animal and treat you like one? Would your employer hire an animal trainer from a zoo to train you and keep you in line? Does your employer surround the top of the building with netting to keep you from jumping off and committing suicide because the working conditions are brutal? Are you, the tax payer, willing to mortgage and yoke yourself to a foreign company for over $3 billion without any return to the tax payers for the next 25 years or more? Each Wisconsin household will pay $1200 to this ...

Cuba: A Recipe For Failure

"With God's help, a free Cuba is what we will soon achieve," President Trump “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein President Trump recently said “Effective immediately, I am canceling the last administration’s completely one-sided deal with Cuba." With all his usual bombast and inaccuracy, Trump described Obama's normalization of diplomatic relations, and small steps toward normal economic relations, as “terrible and misguided.” Trump said his “historic“ actions to reverse these changes ...

PITY THE NATION BY LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI

PITY THE NATION BY LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI Pity the nation whose people are sheep, And whose shepherds mislead them. Pity the nation whose leaders are liars, whose sages are silenced, And whose bigots haunt the air waves. Pity the nation that raises not its voice, Except to praise conquerors and acclaim the bully as hero And aims to rule the world with force and by torture. Pity the nation that knows no other language but its own And no other culture but its own. Pity the nation whose breath is money And sleeps the sleep of the too well ...

CONVERSATIONS AT THE COUNTY FAIRS

I love county fairs. I love the sights, sounds, smells and the tastes of the fair. Moreover, I love all the people. Adorable little kids wander around with snow cones. Grandparents catch up on family news. Hardworking 4-Hers show cattle, cakes and cookies. I especially love the opportunity for conversations with voters about things of importance. The relaxed atmosphere of the fair invites good conversations about what’s going on and how our state should help. Cookies, roads and health care took up much of my conversations. Several home bakers spoke with me about ...
