THE UNIVERSAL ECONOMY – UNIT I: CONCEPTUALIZING THE POSSIBLE

Where sovereign nations with sovereign currencies are concerned, asking “how are you going to pay for it” is always posing the wrong question. It automatically introduces artificial monetary constraints due to flawed manmade economic premises, and societies are invariably told “there isn’t enough money and they must do without.” The real question is, “do we have the resources, energy, manpower, and knowledge to provide for societal needs?” At 21st century levels of human knowhow, the answer to this question is virtually always “yes.” This is economic ...

ANOTHER DAY AT THE RALLY

On Saturday, Feb. 24, the American Federation of State and Municipal Employees, (AFSCME) and Friends, rallied in Solidarity at the Capitol of Wisconsin in Madison. This Rally was part of a National Day of Action where Labor Unions and their Supporters gathered across the Country in a show of Solidarity. The themes echoed what one might expect to see, i.e., “…Unrig the System”, “It’s about Economic Justice!” and the like. I’d guesstimate a few hundred folks joined in the activities and chanting. I was taken aback at seeing a lot of the same folks I saw ...

A DAY WITHOUT MUSIC

One day. That’s all I ask. One day for us to recognize how much we’ve come to depend on and simultaneously disregard music. And to think about life without it. One day without music in the doctor’s waiting room, the supermarket, the car repair shop. One day in silence while driving, while eating lunch at our favorite café, while having our hair cut. One day to live without a buffer against other people’s conversations, without music’s unique ability to suspend us in our own cocoon while noises of our increasingly crowded world batter us on all sides. Think ...

ADVANCE DIRECTIVES

Advance directives are documents signed when we are of sound mind to inform those who will be taking care of us in the future -- usually our power of attorney -- how we want our finances handled and what we would want for medical care under particular circumstances. Until now, there was no advance directive addressing one's preference for medical treatment when suffering from dementia. The National Public Radio show "On Point," heard on many public radio stations from 9:00-11:00 a.m. weekdays, recently discussed a new advance directive form created to address one's ...

The Fair Scheduling Act (AB 866) Authors: Rep. Hebl (D-Sun Prairie) ...

I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE RURAL URBAN DIVIDE

By Sarah van Gelder, YES magazine I thought I knew something about Wisconsin politics. I assumed the state was neatly divided between blue cities, like Madison and Milwaukee, and solidly red rural areas that twice elected Governor Scott Walker, one of the nation’s most right-wing governors, and went for Donald Trump in 2016. Turns out there’s a lot I didn’t know. And the assumptions and stereotypes that I—and many others—hold are dividing us and harming our chances of building powerful coalitions across rural–urban divide. In early February, I visited ...
