THRIVING OR BARELY SURVIVING IN WISCONSIN?

Here are some sobering facts from several reports. The ALICE Report is an acronym which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed Wisconsinites. The ALICE report reveals the struggles our families, neighbors, and co-workers experience on a daily basis who work hard, earn above the federal poverty level, but not enough to afford a basic household budget. Over a third of ALICE households, 670,992, do not earn enough to cover the basic needs of housing, childcare, food, healthcare, transportation. A. In 2017, another 661,565 households lived below the official ...

Retirement Security: Democratic Candidates Hold the Answers

A retirement crisis is unfolding in Wisconsin. Before long, four out of ten of residents will be in their "golden years." Many will have inadequate financial resources in retirement. According to AARP, 41% of Wisconsin's private sector employees (about 928,000 people) work for employers that do not offer any kind of retirement plan. This, along with decades of low-paying jobs, rising health care costs, and the inability of average workers to save on their own, has created this crisis. POWRS (Protect Our Wisconsin Retirement Security) does not endorse any candidate, but ...

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

I'm not a Republican, but I have a pretty good memory, am no fan of mice, and I'm fat. In fact, not just fat; obese. I am almost always the only fat person sitting at a conference table in a room full of people talking about health, and more specifically, the topic of obesity, exercise and nutrition, or as the people around me like to say, “chronic disease prevention.” What is even more awkward is that I suffer from many chronic diseases. Most of them have little to do with my size, but it is not as though I can just start telling everyone, “it’s not what you ...

WHOSE FREEDOM ARE WE CELEBRATING?

On our beautiful July 4 celebration of fireworks, picnics and watermelon, I wonder what kind of freedom we are celebrating. There are many versions of freedom, but two main ones operate in our nation. One is the progressive view and the other is conservative. Each side thinks it is right and the other will destroy our nation. I refer to George Lakoff’s THE LITTLE BLUE BOOK, for the following: Freedom, to the conservative, is based on a strict family model. The strict father is responsible for providing for himself and his own family, but is not responsible for ...

Marathon County’s Ka Lo: Keynote Speaker at State OWR Convention

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF-wgTWygl4 Marathon County Board Supervisor and the head of the Marathon County Progressive Dems, Ka Lo, was invited to be the keynote speaker at Our Wisconsin Revolution's (OWR) State Convention. Among other critical issues, she discussed the Marathon County Board's decision to raise its own compensation even while a significant number of its constituents live in poverty, the unfortunate outcomes that occur in elections when progressives are unfairly shut out, and the need to strive for workers' wages that allow citizens not simply ...

WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US

What’s missing from the debate about our borders? The reason why. People don’t just pick up and leave their ancestral homes and extended families without a good reason. In so doing, they face a dangerous and expensive journey in search of a new home. Yet despite the risks and hardship, these folks feel they have no choice. What we hear is news about brown-skinned folks mobbing our borders, crossing rivers and sneaking into the promised land. We see them standing in lines, tear-stained kids’ faces, our media swamped with shouting heads about illegal immigration. ...

PASS FAIR MAPS LEGISLATION

The U.S. Supreme Court sent the Gill v Whitford case back to the district court, effectively leaving Wisconsin’s unconstitutional election maps in place for the 2018 election. This ruling leaves the onus on Wisconsin to protect voters from gerrymandering for the time being. “The courts didn't fix our current unfair maps, and politicians won't either. We, the people, want fair maps. We do not want partisan politicians to continue fighting over our maps in court and wasting taxpayer money. Wisconsin needs a nonpartisan process for drawing our election maps,” said ...
